Tips with Tiffany

NYC Packing List

In just more than a week I will be heading to NYC with my best friend and favorite travel partner.  We are so similar in our travel styles that it always works out perfectly for us to travel together.  We like to plan ahead, create an itinerary and coordinate outfits with the events we will be doing each day.  I’ve been doing a lot of research for what I need to be packing and how I need to prepare for a winter in NYC, and I’ve gotta tell you, I’m not sure how I am going to fit it all in my suitcase!

Top 10 Things to Do in NYC on a budget. This is an amazing collection of ideas and insider knowledge!

It is going to be really cold, and possibly snowing, and when it is not snowing, it is probably going to be slushy from the melting/salted snow from before.  Either way, a lot of our time will be spent outside, so we need to make sure we dress appropriately.  These are some of my favorite things I will be bringing!

1.  Fleece Lined Tights

Genius.  Really.  Pure genius.  I could not have asked for a better invention for this trip.  I love dresses and skirts, they are so feminine and really make an outfit look that much more well thought out.  I think this will really help with some of the wind and also will enable me to wear some of my most fabulous outfits!

2.  Riding Boots

I bought some riding boots last year at Marshall’s, so they weren’t terribly expensive.  I am definitely planning to wear these, they are comfortable and warm, but I also won’t destroy any of my favorite, expensive shoes.

3.  Booties

Booties are all the rage right now, so they are going to be paired with jeans and possibly with the outfit I’m going to wear to the Broadway show!

4.  Sequins

Somehow, I am going to include sequins in my wardrobe for the weekend.  I have an obsession with sequins and I really think they add something to your outfit.  They can easily go from day to night, which is great for light packing!

5.  Sweaters

I plan to wear my sweaters more than once so I can optimize the space in my suitcase.  I figure the things that are going to be seen the most are my coats and scarves, so it is more worth it to keep space for those.  (this was pointed out to me by my best friend.)

6.  Dresses

I have a couple of dresses I’m going back and forth on to bring.  I want to pack something that can go from day to night with ease so that I can save some space in my suitcase.  I will definitely wear a dress to the Broadway show and when we go out for drinks!

7.  Nail Polish

I absolutely need to bring nail polish to freshen up my polish if it chips or anything.  Enough said.

8.  Outerwear/Accessories

Coats, tights, gloves, scarves, hats, ear warmers, oh my!  I’ll be bringing multiple of each so I can make sure to look fresh each day and have a dry set to wear if I happen to get snowed or rained on the day before!

9.  Dressy Outfit

We’re going to brunch at the Plaza, so I’m going to need something that is ‘business casual,’ which we all know means “Something fabulous” in Tiffany terms.

10.  My Pinterest Board

I made this board to offer some inspiration for what I’m going to be packing.  I’m pretty much aware of the fact that it’s probably going to be a game-time decision, but this board is definitely somewhere for me to start!

Healthy Snacking

One of my lifestyle changes for the year has been to make my life more health centered.  I feel better when I am eating well and exercising often. Yes, it takes a LOT of time, but I think it is completely worth it.  I know I talk about Tone It Up a lot, but I really appreciate the way the trainers take time to encourage their followers.  They make fitness plans each week that can be easily incorporated into any lifestyle.  The community that comes with being a follower is also really great, everyone is always encouraging each other to keep up their hard work and continue to work toward their goals.

Healthy Snacking

I get really hungry throughout the day, so snacking is a must for me.  I need a little something to help me get through the day, especially when I’m exercising as much as I am on a regular basis.  Plus, I just really, really enjoy food!

1.  Almonds

Almonds, or really any nut, make a great snack because they are full of all kinds of nutrients you need and you can easily throw them in a zip lock bag and put them in your purse for when you need a little pick me up.

2.  Granola Bars

I really like to have a granola bar with me at all times because I never know when I’m going to be out and about and start feeling hungry.  A granola bar is enough to tide you over until you can get home and eat your next meal.  Having one on hand also keeps me from making bad decisions when I’m passing a fast food restaurant.

3.  Deli Meat

I know Paleo is a huge thing right now, and I’m definitely not Paleo, but a light meat really does make for a great snack.  I like to roll up pieces of ham or turkey and put either cream cheese or hummus inside.  So good!

4.  Water

Sometimes when you think you’re hungry, it’s really just your body trying to tell you it’s thirsty.  Drinking lots of water helps with digestion and also keeps you from eating too much.

5.  Apples and Peanut Butter

Probably one of my favorite snacks of all time.  Really, it’s so good.  I also sometimes sprinkle a few oats on top for a little extra texture.  It is really filling and the perfect mix of crunchy sweetness.

6.  String Cheese

String cheese is super easy to pack up and carry around.  I prefer cheddar or jack cheese, so I will usually buy a big bag and keep it in my fridge for when I need something extra to add to my lunch.  They also come in small rectangles that you can eat if the stick/cylinder shape makes you uncomfortable.

7.  Grapes

Grapes are so good.  I really like to freeze them and have them as a late afternoon snack.  It’s almost like I’m eating candy, but it’s grapes!

8.  Yogurt

There are so many good things about yogurt.  I like it because one little container doesn’t have very many calories and the sweetness is usually just what I need.  I have a HUGE sweet tooth, and sometimes I get a craving for something sweet and yogurt really curbs that craving.

Eating healthy is so important to any fitness goal.  Sure, it takes a little bit more time, but you absolutely reap the benefits very quickly as you see yourself getting closer to attaining the goals you set out for yourself.

Classy Morning Playlist

Good Morning, Classy Reader!

I don’t know about you, but the things I hear in the morning really have a huge impact on how the rest of my day plays out.  I’ve started using Sleep Cycle so I can wake up “gently,” but I think it goes much further than that.  I always try to play happy music while I’m in the shower and getting dressed, then I turn on the news so I can catch up on current events while I do my makeup, pack my lunch and eat breakfast.  That’s also when I read The Skimm.  But really, good music is the perfect ingredient for a cheery start to a successful day!

Do you have any songs or routines that help you get started on the right foot?

The Skimm

Have you heard about The Skimm?  My best friend told me about it over Christmas and I have been following ever since.  The girls who write it basically read the news, take the highlights, put them into layman’s terms and then send it to your inbox.  Genius.  I love being up to date on current events, but I don’t always like watching the news because it tends to stress me out.  The Skimm is a great way to stay up to date on current events without having to invest too much time in watching each loop of the news, reading the whole paper or surfing through a webpage for hours searching for the information you’re looking for.

The women who started it are so inspiring and just plain adorable.  At the beginning of each Skimm, they will say something like “Skimm’d while watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show – with a cheese plate.”  I mean, honestly, can they be any more real?  I’ve been guilty of watching the show while eating a bowl of ice cream and wishing I looked like the models.

If you’re like me and you’re a busy young professional, I definitely recommend at least trying it out.  I’ve found it incredibly helpful and informative.  If you aren’t fully convinced, visit their Website, or read this article from the Huffington Post!

From Bachelorette Pad to Co-ed Apartment

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about when the time comes to make my apartment co-ed.  Don’t worry, I’m not moving in with my S.O. anytime soon, but I have a lot of friends who live with their boyfriends/fiancee’s, etc. and it has gotten me thinking about what I am going to do when that time comes for me.  My apartment is REALLY girly.  I mean, you walk in and it literally hits you in the face with feminism.  Essentially, it is the definition of a bachelorette pad, complete with pink coffee table, Lilly Pulitzer prints, a gallery wall and many many bright colors.  I had a mini meltdown that I was going to one day have to get rid of virtually everything, and then it occurred to me, there is a way to combine your decorating styles to make your apartment co-ed and well dressed.

1.  Change Your Pillows

Couch pillows are one really easy way to change out the overall feel of your living room.  I currently have pink and green pillows, but it would be so easy to go to the fabric store and pick out a color and/or print that would still go great with my navy couch, without making it too girly.  Men are not into pillows, so this would definitely be a feminine touch, but most people generally recognize that pillows are a key to a well styled couch.

2.  Frame New Pictures

Most of my frames are currently filled with Lilly Pulitzer prints, cutesy quotes and fun little girly things.  It’s not hard to put some pictures on a flash drive and print them at your local office supply store, or just purchase new prints to go in the frames.  As long as your frames aren’t too girly, you can easily just add a new picture inside for little to no cost.

3.  Bedding

You may have to suck it up and just buy new bedding together.  Something neutral and comfortable.  Grays, whites, creams, etc. are always a good choice for the bedroom because it is cozy and not too feminine or masculine.  If you want to add a little bit of spice, get some neutral shams with a cute fringe or some fun pillows.  You can find some really great pillows and bedding at places like T.J. Maxx and Marshalls and it won’t break the bank!

4.  Lamps

You can easily get super feminine or very masculine with your lamp selection, but there are a lot of options that are quite gender neutral and will still make your apartment look chic.  Again, check out your local T.J. Maxx or Marshalls.

5.  Shower Curtains and Bathroom Accessories

My current shower curtain is super beachy and very bright…not exactly ideal for a guy.  Shower curtains aren’t super expensive, and while you’re at it, you might as well go ahead and get the matching soap dish and Kleenex holder 🙂

6.  Sturdy Coffee Table

A coffee table is definitely something you are going to want to invest in, as it will last you for a very long time.  The better the table, the longer it will last, thus, the better the investment.  A good, sturdy coffee table is a perfect item for a co-ed apartment.  You can style it however you like, and for an extra feminine touch, you might add a small vase of flowers.

7.  Table Decor

Neutral tablecloths, placemats, etc. are always a good choice, in any aspect of life.  You can change up the general feel of the table by adding different colored napkins, flowers, plates, etc.  The centerpiece could be a little tricky.  I was raised to be a ‘homemaker’ so I am pretty set on having something in the center of my table…I’m thinking a silver vase with artificial white hydrangeas.  It is feminine because it is a flower, but the white and silver definitely tone it down.

8.  Bathroom Counter

I don’t know about you, but I like to have my make up brushes and lotions sitting out on my bathroom counter.  This is something that I recognize that I might want to put in the closet or something when I get to the point in my life where I live with a boy.  They can easily be replaced with a neutral smelling lotion and maybe a toothbrush holder (to match that new shower curtain, maybe?).

9.  Closet

My closet is currently bursting with all of my clothes, but I am not so naive as to think that I will get to monopolize the closet forever.  Start thinking of ways you can consolidate some items.  Can you hang a sweater over a blouse?  Are your pants able to be folded and put in the drawers to clear out some closet space?  If not, then your new apartment may need a bigger closet!

10.  Get His Opinion

I feel like it is super important to get the guy’s opinion in everything.  He may not care at all about any of the decor or organization of the home, but the fact that he was asked will make him feel special and like he is a part of the decision making process.  It is going to be his home, too, after all!

Pinterest also has some great boards you can cruise through to get some ideas for a gender-neutral home!  I personally love all the grays and whites that are trending right now!

Happy decorating!

On My Radar

This week has been a doozy already, so I feel it necessary to post my #omr things.

1.  Apollos Hester

I heard about this video on the radio the other day and I was instantly hooked.  I was driving to work on a dreary Monday morning and this was exactly the pick me up I needed.  First thing I did when I got into the office was post it on our Facebook page to try to share the motivation with our followers.

2.  The Strength of Christ

3.  The new Kate Spade Calendars

I just got one of the new Kate Spade calendars (specifically the one pictured below) and I am obsessed.  I’ve always been a Lilly Pulizter calendar girl, but I thought it was time to graduate from the bright colors into something a little more sophisticated, and this was the perfect solution.  The inside is fun and flirty, but the outside is sharp and professional.

4.  Taylor Swift

I always find it interesting to hear star’s back stories.  I know someone who went to high school with Taylor Swift, and I thought that was so cool to hear her perspective, but to now hear Taylor Swift speak out is really exciting.

5.  State Fair

I’ve never been to the fair in North Carolina.  I’m pretty sure I went when my family lived in Tennessee, but since I’ve lived here it just wasn’t something that was on my list of things to do.  Now that I am getting older I am super excited to take an evening and go to the fair to eat corn dogs, funnel cake and popcorn all while riding exciting attractions and visiting the various booths they have set up.
